Charlie Tapp Wins Michigan Senior Masters

MICHIGAN STATE USBC BA SENIOR MASTERS TOURNAMENT

Charlie Tapp of Portage won the fourth annual Michigan State Senior Masters at 300 Bowl in Waterford Township Sunday when he defeated John Bennett of Clarkston 401-392 in the final two-game total pins match to win the $2,500 first prize and the title. Bennett settled for the second place check of $1,500.

Tapp qualified fifth with a six-game total of 1,264 on games of 218, 248, 173, 186, 235 and 204. His run in the winner’s bracket included wins over Daniel Harris of Redford 466-336, John Milletics of Sandusky 418-350, Albert Amella III of Macomb 487-374, George Phillips of Centreville 441-391 and Bennett the first time 484-379.

Tapp averaged 220 for the entire tournament. He also wins a paid entry into the 2012 USBC Senior Masters tournament.

“I would like to thank 300 Bowl, the association, my sponsor Roto Grip and especially my wife for encouraging me to bowl in the event.” said Tapp. “I’m glad the conditions were tougher.”

Bennett qualified third with 1,272. He stayed in the winner’s bracket with triumphs over Gary Zarick of Macomb 408-328, Dan Mayer of Waterford Township 404-366, Pete Minaudo of Chesterfield 419-395, Joe Krajenke of Clinton Township 465-435 before falling to Tapp the first time 484-379. In the loser’s bracket he defeated 2009 Senior Masters champion Mitch Jabczenski of Novi 456-417 to advance to the title match. He averaged 209.8.

Jabczenski had to survive a one-game tiebreaker match to get into match play after shooting 1,191. In the tiebreaker game he beat Gene Tidey of Coloma 235-197. Once in match play he lost his first match to top qualifier Harold Sullins of Chesterfield 422-377 before reeling off seven straight victories before losing to Bennett. In his winning streak he defeated Eric Helgemo of Detroit 471-325, Robert Hutchings of Marshall 461-377, Dan Mayer 424-338, Albert Amella III 448-427, Joseph Krajenke 476-411 and George Phillips 425-386 before losing to Bennett 456-417. He cashed for $1,000 after bowling 19 games in match play. Jabczenski took home $1,000.

Phillips qualified eighth with 1,254. In match play he remained in the winner’s bracket with victories over Richard Schultz of Warren 406-371, defending champion Rick Vittone of Canada 438-401, Larry Walker of Garden City 413-290 before falling to Tapp 441-391. In the loser’s bracket he beat Rick Capaldi of Canton 430-415 before losing to Jabczenski 425-386. He settled for $600.

Top qualifier Harold Sullins led qualifying by 89 pins with 1,395. He won his first match over Jabczenski 422-377 before getting knocked into the loser’s bracket by Larry Walker 443-430. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat David Silverman of Farmington Hills 395-381 and Sam Girgenti of St. Clair Shores 403-337 before ending his day with a loss to Rick Capaldi 425-372. Sullins took home $400 and an additional $100 as high qualifier.

Defending champion Rick Vittone was seeded ninth per tournament rule and shot 1,133 in qualifying. He won his first match over Ken Lang of Eastpointe 397-350 before falling to George Phillips 438-401. In the loser’s bracket he beat Rick Eiermann of Garden City 445-397, Jeff Suma Sr. of Auburn Hills 510-389, Pete Minaudo 492-449 before getting knocked out by Rick Capaldi 463-361. Vittone took home $450.

Doug Spicer of Canton recorded the top game during qualifying with a 268 in qualifying sixth with 1,260.

Other local cashers included Jeffrey Suma Sr. of Auburn Hills for $300, Daniel Mayer Jr. of Waterford Township $300 and David Silverman of Farmington Hills $200.

The field of 142 bowlers averaged 185.3 during the six games of qualifying.

The top 32 qualifiers averaged 204.8 during qualifying and 198.9 in match play.

The Michigan State USBC Senior Masters Tournament is a USBC certified event operated by the Michigan State USBC Association.
