Vittone Victorious in MDUSBC Senior Masters

MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS

Rick Vittone of Tecumseh, Ontario came back in style after losing his first match in the finals to defeat Albert Amella III of Macomb 469-466 in the two-game match, winning the MDUSBC Senior Masters title at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park and taking home the top prize of $3,000.

After qualifying 15th with a six-game total of 1,371, Vittone remained in the winner’s bracket with triumphs over Thomas Byrd of Clinton Township 472-436, Jim Lauricella of Sterling Heights 445-421, Edward Flowers of West Bloomfield 466-393, Ernest Segura Jr. of Taylor 414-389 and Amella the first time 441-416. Once Amella advanced out of the loser’s bracket he beat Vittone 472-456 setting up the championship match.

In the championship match Amella surged out to an 89-pin lead over Vittone after one game 279-190. Vittone began the last game with the first nine strikes, while Amella was going at a 200 pace. When Vittone failed to strike in the tenth frame he finished with 279. This forced Amella to throw two strikes in the tenth frame. Amella got the first strike, but couldn’t get the second making Vittone the winner.

Vittone averaged 226.7 for 20 games of competition.

“I can’t believe it. Being that far down I just kept throwing strikes.” said Vittone. “I didn’t even realize I’d won until I was adding up the scores on the recap sheet.”

Amella qualified 24th with 1,346. In match play he remained undefeated with victories over defending champion Richard Planko of Novi 426-375, Harold Sullins of Chesterfield 514-403, Gary Pawlak of Flat Rock 482-468 and Leonard Cianciolo of Warren 462-445 before falling to Vittone 441-416. In the loser’s bracket he knocked Paul Kwiecien of Lansing out of the competition 477-472 with an exciting finish to set up the rematch with Vittone. He beat Vittone 472-456, but came up short in the final match 469-466. Amella settled for $1,500.

Kwiecien qualified 30th with 1,328. In match play he beat Mike Lee of Dearborn Heights 424-392 and Tony Stipcak of Redford 472-455 before falling to Ernest Segura Jr. 473-443. In the loser’s bracket he rebounded with wins over Harold Sullins 478-449, Edward Flowers 393-370 and Leonard Cianciolo 524-369 before avenging his loss to Segura 444-393 and finally getting knocked out by Amella 477-472. Kwiecien averaged 226.2 and cashed for $1,000.

Segura qualified 27th with 1,339 and remained in the winner’s bracket with victories over David Tulak of Taylor 448-386, Gerald Johnson of Riverview 480-479 and Kwiecien 473-443 before falling into the loser’s bracket with a loss to Vittone 414-389. In the loser’s bracket he beat Richard Wayne of Westland 502-394 before getting knocked out by Kwiecien 444-393. He averaged 223.6 and took home $750.

Cianciolo finished fifth for $500 and averaged 223.9.

Wayne ended up sixth, picking up $500 after averaging 222.7.

Lee finished seventh, averaged 222.8 and cashed for $400.

Flowers took home $400 for his eighth place finish, averaging 207.1.

Roy Sonier of Southgate won the Super Senior competition for non-qualifiers 60 years of age and over. He defeated Edwin Austreng of Waterford Township 239-204 for the title. He won $200 for his efforts and Austreng walked away with a check for $175.

Other Oakland County seniors who cashed were Michael McCleskey of Southfield for $250, Mark Hatchigian of Novi $225, Roderick Bryant of Oak Park $200, Richard Planko of Novi $200, John Bennett of Clarkston $120, Joseph Bilicki of Lake Orion $120, David Eatmon of Ferndale $120, Dale Barger of Holly $120, Lee Snow of Wixom $120 and Jeffrey Suma Sr. of Auburn Hills $120.

Amella, Cianciolo, Vittone and Segura remain undefeated in MDUSBC Senior Masters

MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Senior Masters tournament qualifying and first rounds of match play wrapped up at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park Sunday, Feb. 13.

Albert Amella III of Macomb, Leonard Cianciolo of Warren, Rick Vittone of Tecumseh, Ontario and Ernest Segura Jr. of Taylor remained undefeated in the double elimination format.

Amella qualified 24th with a six-game total of 1,346. In match play he remained undefeated with wins over defending champion Richard Planko of Novi 426-375, Harold Sullins of Chesterfield 514-403 and Gary Pawlak of Flat Rock 482-468 in the two-game matches in the double elimination format.

Cianciolo qualified 21st with 1,355. In match play he beat Steven Hubble of Westland 479-423, Kenneth Wyatt of Sterling Heights 484-424 and Richard Wayne of Westland 451-409.

Vittone stayed alive with victories over Thomas Byrd of Clinton Township 472-436, James Lauricella of Sterling Heights 445-421 and Edward Flowers of West Bloomfield 466-393. He qualified 15th with 1,371.

Segura beat David Tulak of Taylor 448-486, Gerald Johnson of Riverview 480-479 and Paul Kwiecien of Lansing 473-443 after qualifying 27th with 1,339.

Alive in the loser’s bracket are Paul Kwiecien, Edward Flowers, Richard Wayne and George Lee of Dearborn.

Top qualifier Michael McCleskey of Southfield bowled 1,446 on games of 237,262,238,193, 226 and 290.

The 156-player field averaged 206.4, with the top 32 finalists averaging 227.6.

The final rounds of match play begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Thunderbowl Lanes.

Novi's Planko to Defend Title in MDUSBC Senior Masters

MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS PREVIEW

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Senior Masters Tournament qualifying is slated to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.

Qualifying will be conducted in two squads on Feb. 12. After the six games of qualifying is completed the top 31 players plus defending champion Richard Planko of Novi will return for double elimination match play on Sunday, Feb. 13. The top eight players after the first day of match play will come back on Saturday, Feb. 19 to complete the competition. Matches consist of two games total pins.

First place will pay $3,000 with $1,500 for runner-up.

The star studded field includes Ed Austreng of Waterford Township (Senior Masters champion 2005), John Bennett of Clarkston (Masters 1977 & Senior Masters 2004), Roy Biggs of Canton (Senior Masters 2006), Anthony Dadeppo of Troy (Masters 1995), Doug Evans of Gibraltar (Masters 1998 and Senior Masters 1999 and 2000), Quintin Green of Dearborn Heights (Masters 1992), Joe Krajenke of Clinton Township (Masters 1999), Kenneth Lang of Eastpointe (Masters 1987), Fred McClain of Allen Park (Masters 1978 and Senior Masters 2003), Lee Snow of Wixom (Senior Masters 2007), Harley Trumbull Jr. of New Boston (Senior Masters 1996 and 2002) and David Tulak of Taylor (Masters 1988).

MDUSBC MASTERS

Mason Brantley of Detroit won the Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters Tournament at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights Sunday when he defeated David Ewald of Macomb 699-681 to win the $4,000 first prize and the title. Ewald settled for the second place check of $2,000.

Brantley qualified 17th with a 10-game total of 2,152. He averaged 224.2 for the entire tournament and 229.3 in match play. He remained undefeated with triumphs over Michael Norris Jr. of Melvindale 680-519; Ewald, the first time, 667-594; Mark Moore of Macomb 748-662; Brian Lake of Warren 672-626; and Richard Wayne of Westland 661-655 en route to the final match.

“This is absolutely number one in my career,” said the 29-year-old Brantley. “I’m very happy where my game is going.”

Brantley fell behind in the match against Wayne by 68 pins after two games and roared back in the last game to win the three-game match by five pins.

“I never panicked in any match. A couple of years ago I would have given up in the match against Rick (Wayne), but I’ve grown.”

2006 champion Ewald was the top qualifier with 2,354. He averaged 233.6. After winning his first match over Ronald Rospierski of Warren 687-589 he lost to Brantley 667-594 to fall into the loser’s bracket. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Michael Calhoun of Wyandotte 739-732, Craig Nidiffer of Monroe 690-630, Ryan VanHecke of Sterling Heights 683-667, Kurt Pilon of Warren 697-552, Brian Lake of Warren 733-595, Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township 674-663 and Wayne 811-660 on his way to the final match.

Wayne qualified sixth with 2,220. In match play he beat Kurt Pilon of Warren 681-677, Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township 645-542, Nick Wissinger of Clinton Township 678-650, Austreng 633-614 before falling to Brantley 661-655. In the loser’s bracket he got knocked out by Ewald 811-660. Wayne cashed for $1,500.

Two-time champion Austreng qualified 26th with 2,116. In match play he defeated Harold Sullins of Chesterfield 654-584, Stephen Barry of Warren 676-552, Ryan VanHecke of Sterling Heights 807-589 before losing to Wayne 633-614. In the loser’s bracket he beat Corey Miller of Grand Blanc 698-678 before falling to Ewald 674-663 to get knocked out of the competition. He settled for $1,000.

Defending champion Eddie Grace of Howell finished 23rd for $275. Former champions Mark Moore of Macomb finished 11th for $400, Joseph Krajenke of Clinton Township finished 14th for $325, Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township 16th for $325 and Kerry Kreft of Warren 20th for $275.

Top games of the competition were recorded by Ewald and Calhoun with 299.

Other local cashers were Troy Stus of South Lyon for $500, Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township $325, John Robertson of Waterford Township $225 and Paul Szumny of Commerce Township $150.

Next year’s event will be held at Century Bowl in Waterford Township with qualifying on Jan. 21-22 and match play on Jan. 28-29, 2012.

BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

Rick Schultz of Warren won the Budweiser Michigan Majors over top seed Shane Dufresne of Clio 248-155 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park to claim the top prize of $1,300. Dufresne received $600.

Schultz qualified fourth with a nine-game total of 2,156 and proceeded to beat Joe Manor of Lansing 259-203, Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights 258-227 and Randy Warnken of Clinton Township 255-206 en route to the championship match. This was Schultz’s third MMBA title.

Dufresne was the top qualifier with 2,208 which included a 300 and 299 game.

“This is just amazing,” said Schultz. “It’s been 10 years since my last win. I never thought I would win again at my age.” Schultz is 55 years old.

Warnken earned $600, Wyatt $500 and Manor $400.

Local cashers were Bob Chamberlain Jr. of Holly for $260 and Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township $110.

The next MMBA tournament will be Feb. 19 at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights.

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

Mike Abbey of Jackson won his first National Senior Bowling Association title with a 289-214 triumph over Mike Chapman of Garden City at Oak Lanes in Westland.

Abbey qualified 16th and beat Ross Beers of Saginaw 255-247, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield 246-234, George Humphry of Grosse Pointe Farms 235-190 and Dennis Korkoske of East Lansing 269-235 on his way to the final match. Abbey took home $1,000.

Chapman qualified 11th. In match play he defeated Mike McCleskey of Southfield 178-171, top seed John Thomasma of Kalamazoo 199-195, Larry Walker of Garden City 212-186 and Tony Stipcak of Redford 248-227 en route to the clash with Abbey. Chapman received $500.

Oakland County senior cashers were Phil Horowitz for $120, Mike McCleskey $110, Mike LaRocca of New Hudson $110 and Kevin Scott of Ferndale $110.

The next NSBA event will be Feb. 5 at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights.

Mason Brantley Wins MDUSBC Masters

MDUSBC MASTERS

Mason Brantley of Detroit won the Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters Tournament at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights Sunday when he defeated David Ewald of Macomb 699-681 to win the $4,000 first prize and the title. Ewald settled for the second place check of $2,000.

Brantley qualified 17th with a 10-game total of 2,152. He averaged 224.2 for the entire tournament and 229.3 in match play. He remained undefeated with triumphs over Michael Norris Jr. of Melvindale 680-519; Ewald, the first time, 667-594; Mark Moore of Macomb 748-662; Brian Lake of Warren 672-626; and Richard Wayne of Westland 661-655 en route to the final match.

“This is absolutely number one in my career,” said the 29-year-old Brantley. “I’m very happy where my game is going.”

Brantley fell behind in the match against Wayne by 68 pins after two games and roared back in the last game to win the three-game match by five pins.

“I never panicked in any match. A couple of years ago I would have given up in the match against Rick (Wayne), but I’ve grown.”

2006 champion Ewald was the top qualifier with 2,354. He averaged 233.6. After winning his first match over Ronald Rospierski of Warren 687-589 he lost to Brantley 667-594 to fall into the loser’s bracket. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Michael Calhoun of Wyandotte 739-732, Craig Nidiffer of Monroe 690-630, Ryan VanHecke of Sterling Heights 683-667, Kurt Pilon of Warren 697-552, Brian Lake of Warren 733-595, Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township 674-663 and Wayne 811-660 on his way to the final match.

Wayne qualified sixth with 2,220. In match play he beat Kurt Pilon of Warren 681-677, Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township 645-542, Nick Wissinger of Clinton Township 678-650, Austreng 633-614 before falling to Brantley 661-655. In the loser’s bracket he got knocked out by Ewald 811-660. Wayne cashed for $1,500.

Two-time champion Austreng qualified 26th with 2,116. In match play he defeated Harold Sullins of Chesterfield 654-584, Stephen Barry of Warren 676-552, Ryan VanHecke of Sterling Heights 807-589 before losing to Wayne 633-614. In the loser’s bracket he beat Corey Miller of Grand Blanc 698-678 before falling to Ewald 674-663 to get knocked out of the competition. He settled for $1,000.

Defending champion Eddie Grace of Howell finished 23rd for $275. Former champions Mark Moore of Macomb finished 11th for $400, Joseph Krajenke of Clinton Township finished 14th for $325, Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township 16th for $325 and Kerry Kreft of Warren 20th for $275.

Top games of the competition were recorded by Ewald and Calhoun with 299.

Other local cashers were Troy Stus of South Lyon for $500, Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township $325, John Robertson of Waterford Township $225 and Paul Szumny of Commerce Township $150.

Next year’s event will be held at Century Bowl in Waterford Township with qualifying on Jan. 21-22 and match play on Jan. 28-29, 2012.

BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

Rick Schultz of Warren won the Budweiser Michigan Majors over top seed Shane Dufresne of Clio 248-155 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park to claim the top prize of $1,300. Dufresne received $600.

Schultz qualified fourth with a nine-game total of 2,156 and proceeded to beat Joe Manor of Lansing 259-203, Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights 258-227 and Randy Warnken of Clinton Township 255-206 en route to the championship match. This was Schultz’s third MMBA title.

Dufresne was the top qualifier with 2,208 which included a 300 and 299 game.

“This is just amazing,” said Schultz. “It’s been 10 years since my last win. I never thought I would win again at my age.” Schultz is 55 years old.

Warnken earned $600, Wyatt $500 and Manor $400.

Local cashers were Bob Chamberlain Jr. of Holly for $260 and Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township $110.

The next MMBA tournament will be Feb. 19 at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights.
