Walker Wins MMBA Championship

Larry Walker of Garden City won the 44th Budweiser Michigan Majors Championship at Cherry Hill Lanes in Dearborn Heights with a 225-210 victory over defending champion Aaron Lorincz of Saginaw.

Walker took home the top prize of $1,500 after qualifying second and defeating Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights 300-258 to advance to the final match.

Lorincz was the top qualifier to the stepladder finals with a six-game record of 1,560, an average of 260 on games of 267, 213, 277, 255, 300 and 248. He received $750 for his efforts.

“This was huge, the most rewarding win I have had.” said Walker. “I will be 55 next week and I never thought I was going to win again against these talented young kids.” This was Walker’s ninth MMBA title and the third time he’d won the Championship Tournament.

“This was exciting to almost win back-to-back Championship Tournaments.” said Lorincz. “I want a rematch.”

The stepladder finals began with Anthony Hargar of Flint beating Dan Folkes of Belleville 243-207 and Wyatt narrowly defeating Hargar 227-226.

Wyatt cashed for $650, Hargar $550 and Folkes $450.

Bob Chamberlain Jr. of Holly was the only local casher for $300 for his sixth place finish.

The next MMBA event will be the Tournament of Champions on Dec. 17 at Taylor Lanes in Taylor.

Capaldi Captures NSBA Title

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

Rick Capaldi of Canton won the National Senior Bowling Association event at Plaza Lanes in Plymouth with a 214-204 triumph over Dennis Korkoske of East Lansing.

Capaldi took home the top check of $1,000. He qualified third and proceeded to beat Dick Selgo of Archbold, Ohio 247-235, Larry Walker of Garden City 245-222 and Larry Franz of Redford 195-192 en route to the championship match.

Korkoske qualified 12th. In match play he defeated Steve Sears of Michigan Center 225-220, Greg Cohen of Livonia 247-236 and Dave Forfitt of Canada 269-209. Korkoske cashed for $500.

The top game in the competition was recorded by John Thomasma of Kalamazoo with 300. Mike McCleskey of Southfield was the top qualifier.

Local seniors who fared well were Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield for $150, McCleskey $100 and Ken Kossick of Commerce Township $100.

The next NSBA event will be the “Holiday Tournament” on Dec. 10 at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights.

Fryer Wins MDUSBC Super Senior Masters Event

MDUSBC SUPER SENIOR MASTERS

John Fryer of Washington won the MDUSBC Super Senior Masters title and the top prize of $1,000 at Van Dyke Bowl in Sterling Heights a 204-198 triumph over Rick Capaldi of Canton. Capaldi settled for $500.

Fryer qualified 11th with 1,060 and beat Nick Beelaard of Windsor 204-198, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield 202-195 and Jim Lauricella of Sterling Heights 215-209 before getting knocked to the loser’s bracket by Capaldi 215-191. In the loser’s bracket he beat Scantamburlo 215-203 to avenge the earlier defeat. He then beat Capaldi 237-168 to force the overtime match. He averaged 210.7 for 12 games of competition.

Capaldi qualified fifth with a five-game total of 1,120. He remained in the winner’s bracket with victories over Richard Walczak of Flat Rock 193-176, David Bernhardt Sr. of Romeo 213-206, Leo Scantamburlo of Riverview 206-196 and Fryer 215-191 before falling to Fryer 237-168 to force the overtime match. He averaged 210.3 for the competition.

Scantamburlo finished third for $400 and Lauricella fourth for $300.

Scantamburlo qualified ninth with 1,072 and averaged 221.5 for 11 games of competition. In match play he remained in the winner’s bracket by defeating John Faleris of South Lyon 229-155, top qualifier Dan Mytty of Livonia 246-211 before falling into the loser’s bracket with a loss to Capaldi 206-196. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Terry Bialkowski of Windsor 290-137 and Jim Lauricella of Sterling Heights 201-194 before falling to Fryer 215-203 to end his run.

Lauricella qualified seventh with 1,096 and averaged 219.7 for 10 tournament games. In match play he beat Nick Cipiti of Clinton Township 224-156 and Larry Franz of Redford 239-214 before falling to Fryer 215-209. In the loser’s bracket he defeated Dan Mayer of Waterford Township 235-201 before ending his day with the loss to Scantamburlo.

Mytty led the field of 67 with a five-game total of 1,156. John Lingenfelter of Center Line had the top game during qualifying with 298 and Mytty and Scantamburlo the top game in match play with 290.

Other local seniors cashing included Mayer for $250, Horowitz for $175 and Faleris $150.

William Haynes of Rochester Hills won the special competition to non-qualifiers over the age of 70 with a 245-198 win over John Staricha of Highland. Haynes took home $175 and Staricha $150 for their efforts. Dennis O’Neill of Rochester Hills also cashed for $100.

The MDUSBC Super Senior Masters Tournament is an USBC certified event operated by the Metro Detroit USBC Association, the largest local association of the United States Bowling Congress with more than 60,000 adult and youth members.

MDUSBC JUNIOR MASTERS

Joshua Chaney of Rochester Hills prevailed in the boy’s division and Nicole Mikaelian of Macomb won the girl’s division of the Metro Detroit USBC Association Junior Masters at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.

Chaney defeated Shawn Bibee of Fair Haven 245-182 to win the boy’s division. Both earned spots in the national finals of the USBC Junior Gold Championships in July 2012 in Indianapolis

Mikaelian beat Stephanie Penxa of Romeo 186-122 to capture the girl’s division. Mikaelian also earned a spot in the Junior Gold Championships.

Bibee was the top qualifier among the boys with a six-game total of 1,174. Chaney qualified second with 1,151.

Mikaelian was the top girl’s qualifier with 1,059, while Penxa qualified second with 1,042.

The boy’s stepladder finals began with Charles Zelechowski of Warren beating Andrew Anderson of Holly 233-171. Zelechowski then defeated Kevin Craft of Shelby Township 158-143. Chaney beat Zelechowski 197-148 to advance to the championship match.

The girl’s stepladder finals kicked off with Ashley Brancato of St. Clair Shores beating Sara Uelman of Ferndale 202-140. Penxa then beat Brancato 160-153 en route to the finals.

Oczepek Wins Inaugural Women's Series Event

MDUSBC WOMEN’S SERIES

Julie Oczepek of Reese won the inaugural Metro Detroit USBC Association (MDUSBC) Rip 10 Entertainment Women’s Series event on Sunday with a 246-157 triumph over Michelle Ewald of Clinton Township at Shelby Lanes in Shelby Township. Oczepek took home the top prize of $500, while Ewald settled for $250.

Oczepek qualified 15th in the field of 47 with a four-game total of 836. Her qualifying total included a final game of 249 to earn the next to the last spot in the single-game single-elimination match play.


Once in match play she dispatched Nicole Edwards of Sterling Heights 222-212, Christine Wissinger of Clinton Township 224-184 and Lauren Roberts of Hazel Park 213-190 en route to the championship match.

Ewald qualified ninth with 860. Her victories in match play included wins over Audrea Edwards of Farmington 256-221, top qualified Lisa Bishop of Belleville 245-205 and Novella Daniels of Detroit 246-204.

Local bowlers who cashed were Lauren Roberts of Hazel Park for $125 and Audrea Edwards of Farmington $50.

The next MDUSBC / Rip 10 Entertainment Women’s Series event will be Sunday, Dec. 18 at Van Dyke Bowl in Sterling Heights.
