Fryer Wins MDUSBC Super Senior Masters Event

MDUSBC SUPER SENIOR MASTERS

John Fryer of Washington won the MDUSBC Super Senior Masters title and the top prize of $1,000 at Van Dyke Bowl in Sterling Heights a 204-198 triumph over Rick Capaldi of Canton. Capaldi settled for $500.

Fryer qualified 11th with 1,060 and beat Nick Beelaard of Windsor 204-198, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield 202-195 and Jim Lauricella of Sterling Heights 215-209 before getting knocked to the loser’s bracket by Capaldi 215-191. In the loser’s bracket he beat Scantamburlo 215-203 to avenge the earlier defeat. He then beat Capaldi 237-168 to force the overtime match. He averaged 210.7 for 12 games of competition.

Capaldi qualified fifth with a five-game total of 1,120. He remained in the winner’s bracket with victories over Richard Walczak of Flat Rock 193-176, David Bernhardt Sr. of Romeo 213-206, Leo Scantamburlo of Riverview 206-196 and Fryer 215-191 before falling to Fryer 237-168 to force the overtime match. He averaged 210.3 for the competition.

Scantamburlo finished third for $400 and Lauricella fourth for $300.

Scantamburlo qualified ninth with 1,072 and averaged 221.5 for 11 games of competition. In match play he remained in the winner’s bracket by defeating John Faleris of South Lyon 229-155, top qualifier Dan Mytty of Livonia 246-211 before falling into the loser’s bracket with a loss to Capaldi 206-196. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Terry Bialkowski of Windsor 290-137 and Jim Lauricella of Sterling Heights 201-194 before falling to Fryer 215-203 to end his run.

Lauricella qualified seventh with 1,096 and averaged 219.7 for 10 tournament games. In match play he beat Nick Cipiti of Clinton Township 224-156 and Larry Franz of Redford 239-214 before falling to Fryer 215-209. In the loser’s bracket he defeated Dan Mayer of Waterford Township 235-201 before ending his day with the loss to Scantamburlo.

Mytty led the field of 67 with a five-game total of 1,156. John Lingenfelter of Center Line had the top game during qualifying with 298 and Mytty and Scantamburlo the top game in match play with 290.

Other local seniors cashing included Mayer for $250, Horowitz for $175 and Faleris $150.

William Haynes of Rochester Hills won the special competition to non-qualifiers over the age of 70 with a 245-198 win over John Staricha of Highland. Haynes took home $175 and Staricha $150 for their efforts. Dennis O’Neill of Rochester Hills also cashed for $100.

The MDUSBC Super Senior Masters Tournament is an USBC certified event operated by the Metro Detroit USBC Association, the largest local association of the United States Bowling Congress with more than 60,000 adult and youth members.

MDUSBC JUNIOR MASTERS

Joshua Chaney of Rochester Hills prevailed in the boy’s division and Nicole Mikaelian of Macomb won the girl’s division of the Metro Detroit USBC Association Junior Masters at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.

Chaney defeated Shawn Bibee of Fair Haven 245-182 to win the boy’s division. Both earned spots in the national finals of the USBC Junior Gold Championships in July 2012 in Indianapolis

Mikaelian beat Stephanie Penxa of Romeo 186-122 to capture the girl’s division. Mikaelian also earned a spot in the Junior Gold Championships.

Bibee was the top qualifier among the boys with a six-game total of 1,174. Chaney qualified second with 1,151.

Mikaelian was the top girl’s qualifier with 1,059, while Penxa qualified second with 1,042.

The boy’s stepladder finals began with Charles Zelechowski of Warren beating Andrew Anderson of Holly 233-171. Zelechowski then defeated Kevin Craft of Shelby Township 158-143. Chaney beat Zelechowski 197-148 to advance to the championship match.

The girl’s stepladder finals kicked off with Ashley Brancato of St. Clair Shores beating Sara Uelman of Ferndale 202-140. Penxa then beat Brancato 160-153 en route to the finals.
