MICHIGAN STATE MASTERS

Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township won the Michigan State Masters at M66 Bowl in Battle Creek Sunday when he defeated Art Brown of Lansing 505-455 to win the $5,000 first prize and his second Michigan State Masters title. Brown settled for the second place check of $2,500.

Austreng, the 2008 Michigan State Masters champion, qualified third with 1,491. He remained in the winner’s bracket with triumphs over Fleming Cook of Woodhaven 482-422, Rick Zohott of Eaton Rapids 523-392, Kerry Kreft of Warren 449-445, Steve Novak of Bay City 493-489 and Dan MacLelland of Saginaw 5070-414. When Brown emerged from the loser’s bracket Brown won the first match 504-485 before Austreng was triumphant 505-455 to clinch the title.

He also won a paid entry into the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Masters tournament.

“I’m stoked.” said Austreng. “I guess this was just meant to be. I wasn’t sure if I could even come to the tournament.”

Austreng is the manager of 300 Bowl in Waterford Township and was unsure until Friday if he could even get off work to bowl. The others on the management team at 300 Bowl had been ill all week and a full weekend of business was scheduled, but everything worked out allowing him to bowl.

Brown qualified fifth with 1,451. He won his first match over Arnie Goldman of Roseville 491-434 before falling to Dan MacLelland of Saginaw 579-450 to get knocked to the loser’s bracket. In the loser’s bracket he beat Toby Sidle of Saginaw 486-467, Anthony Wright of Detroit 504-470, Dale Hofmeister of Essexville 490-446, 2009 champion Tom Smallwood of Saginaw 507-504, Craig Nidiffer of East Lansing 544-528 and Kurt Pilon of Warren 484-414. In the finals of the loser’s bracket Dan MacLelland had the match in hand when he left the 4-6-7-10 split on the fill ball in the tenth frame. After converting two pins the match ended up tied at 464. In the ninth and 10th frame roll off Brown prevailed 39-36 to advance to the championship match. In the final match he beat Austreng 504-485 before losing 505-455 to finish the competition.

Dan MacLelland qualified 12th with 1,417. He remained in the winner’s bracket with wins over Tom Smallwood 533-420, Brown the first time 579-450, Ray Eddy II of Saginaw 468-453, Craig Nidiffer 492-439 before getting knocked to the loser’s bracket by Austreng 507-414. In the loser’s bracket he lost to Brown to end his day. He took home $1,250.
