David Ewald Leads MDUSBC Masters Qualifying

MDUSBC MASTERS QUALIFYING

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters tournament qualifying wrapped up at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights Sunday, Jan. 23 with David Ewald of Macomb leading the 10-game qualifying round with 2,354.

The 2006 MDUSBC Masters champion Ewald averaged 235.4 for the two days of qualifying rounds. Five-game rounds of 1,124 and 1,230 propelled him to the lead. Ewald shot a tournament high 299 in the first game of the second round and led by 49 pins over Ryan VanHecke of Sterling Heights. Ewald had games of 214-224-189-251-246-299-235-235-247-214. Ewald will face Ron Rospierski of Warren in first round match play action on Saturday, Jan. 29.

VanHecke had five-game qualifying blocks of 1,150 and 1,135 on Sunday to be seeded second. He faces Troy Stus of South Lyon.

Defending champion Eddie Grace of Howell is seeded ninth and will face Craig Nidiffer of Monroe.

In addition to Stus other Oakland County bowlers in the finals are 2005 and 2007 Masters champion Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township who faces Harold Sullins of Chesterfield Township; and John Robertson of Waterford Township who faces fellow county resident 1997 Masters champion Ken Kossick of Commerce Township.

The maximum field of 160 averaged 197.5, with the top 32 finalists averaging 216.5. Ewald had the top qualifying block with 1,230 and shared top game honors with Mike Calhoun of Wyandotte with 299.

Match play begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Astro Lanes in the double elimination three-game match play format. The final match is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.

The competition was conducted on the “Blue” pattern of the Red, White and Blue series of lane patterns developed by the United States Bowling Congress. BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

Rick Schultz of Warren won the Budweiser Michigan Majors over top seed Shane Dufresne of Clio 248-155 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park to claim the top prize of $1,300. Dufresne received $600.

Schultz qualified fourth with a nine-game total of 2,156 and proceeded to beat Joe Manor of Lansing 259-203, Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights 258-227 and Randy Warnken of Clinton Township 255-206 en route to the championship match. This was Schultz’s third MMBA title.

Dufresne was the top qualifier with 2,208 which included a 300 and 299 game.

“This is just amazing,” said Schultz. “It’s been 10 years since my last win. I never thought I would win again at my age.” Schultz is 55 years old.

Warnken earned $600, Wyatt $500 and Manor $400.

Local cashers were Bob Chamberlain Jr. of Holly for $260 and Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township $110.

The next MMBA tournament will be Feb. 19 at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights.

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

Mike Abbey of Jackson won his first National Senior Bowling Association title with a 289-214 triumph over Mike Chapman of Garden City at Oak Lanes in Westland.

Abbey qualified 16th and beat Ross Beers of Saginaw 255-247, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield 246-234, George Humphry of Grosse Pointe Farms 235-190 and Dennis Korkoske of East Lansing 269-235 on his way to the final match. Abbey took home $1,000.

Chapman qualified 11th. In match play he defeated Mike McCleskey of Southfield 178-171, top seed John Thomasma of Kalamazoo 199-195, Larry Walker of Garden City 212-186 and Tony Stipcak of Redford 248-227 en route to the clash with Abbey. Chapman received $500.

Oakland County senior cashers were Phil Horowitz for $120, Mike McCleskey $110, Mike LaRocca of New Hudson $110 and Kevin Scott of Ferndale $110.

The next NSBA event will be Feb. 5 at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights.
