Sullins Wins MDUSBC Senior Masters

MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS

Harold Sullins of Chesterfield beat 2005 MDUSBC Senior Masters champion Ed Austreng of Waterford Township 470-360 in the two-game title match to win the MDUSBC Senior Masters title at Rosebowl Lanes in Roseville and took home the top prize of $3,000.

After qualifying second with a six-game total of 1,439, Sullins remained undefeated with wins over Rick Capaldi of Canton 483-446, Martin Janeski of Wyandotte 418-382, William Haynes of Rochester Hills 458-327, Sam Girgenti of Clinton Township 420-400 and Austreng the first time 440-391.

Sullins averaged 229.3 for 18 games of competition.

“This was a satisfying win considering I learned to bowl in this center as a youth.” said Sullins. “The first match against Capaldi was one of the toughest I faced during the tournament even though all of the opponents were tough.”

Austreng was the top qualifier with 1,444. In match play he defeated Mike Lee of Dearborn Heights 449-436, John Milletics of Sandusky 472-380, Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights 419-414 and Anthony Dadeppo of Troy 440-383 before losing to Sullins 440-391 the first time. In the loser’s bracket he beat Albert Amella III of Macomb 414-392 to advance to the championship match. He averaged 219.4 and took home $1,500 as the runner-up.

Amella qualified 25th with 1,307. He beat LaBlance Winder of Madison Heights 410-341 before getting knocked into the loser’s bracket by Ken Wyatt 460-459. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Richard Schultz of Warren 479-390, Edward Mintz of Canton 444-443, Douglas Spicer of Canton 452-378, John Milletics 400-368, Anthony Dadeppo 491-470 and Sam Girgenti of Clinton Township 487-457 before getting knocked out by Austreng 414-392. Amella averaged 221.9 and cashed for $1,000.

Girgenti qualified 22nd with 1,317 and beat James Coleman of Clinton Township 373-371, Anthony Stipcak Jr. of Redford 454-374 and Douglas Spicer 431-416 before falling into the loser’s bracket with a loss to Sullins 420-400. In the loser’s bracket he beat Michael Lucente of Warren 391-390 before falling to Amella 487-457. He averaged 212.4 and took home $750.

Lucente finished fifth for $500 and averaged 221.7.

Dadeppo ended up sixth, picking up $500 after averaging 217.8.

Wyatt finished seventh, averaged 224.8 and cashed for $400.

Milletics took home $400 for his eighth place finish, averaging 214.9.

Other Oakland County seniors who cashed were Bill Haynes of Rochester Hills for $300, LaBlance Winder of Madison Heights $225, Thomas Strobl of Bloomfield $200, Rod Bryant of Oak Park $200, Ken Kossick of Commerce $150, Philip Horowitz of West Bloomfield $125, David Silverman of Farmington Hills $120 and Mitch Jabczenski Sr. of Novi $120.

Leonard Cianciolo of Warren won the Super Senior competition for non-qualifiers 60 years of age and over. He defeated Thomas Murphy of St. Clair Shores 224-173 for the title. He won $200 for his efforts and Murphy walked away with a check for $175.

Austreng, Dadeppo, Girgenti and Sullins Still Alive in MDUSBC Senior Masters

MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS 


The Metro Detroit USBC Association Senior Masters tournament qualifying and first rounds of match play wrapped up at Rosebowl Lanes in Roseville Sunday, Feb. 12. 

Ed Austreng of Waterford Township, Tony Dadeppo of Troy, Sam Girgenti of St. Clair Shores and Harold Sullins of Chesterfield Township remained undefeated in the double elimination format. 

Austreng was the top qualifier with a six-game total of 1,444. In match play he remained undefeated with wins over Mike Lee of Dearborn Heights 449-436, John Milletics of Sandusky 472-380 and Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights in the two-game matches in the double elimination format. 

Dadeppo qualified 21st with 1,317. In match play he beat Tim Baker of Shelby Township 402-387, defending champion Rick Vittone of Tecumseh, Ontario 453-432 and Enrico Odorico of Macomb 460-429. 

Girgenti stayed alive with victories over James Coleman of Clinton Township 373-371, Tony Stipcak of Redford 454-374 and Doug Spicer of Canton 431-416. He qualified 22nd with 1,317. 

Sullins beat Rick Capaldi of Canton 483-446, Martin Janeski of Wyandotte 418-382 and Bill Haynes of Rochester Hills 458-327, after qualifying second with 1,439. 

Alive in the loser’s bracket are Albert Amella III of Macomb, John Milletics, Mike Lucente of Warren and Ken Wyatt. 

Top qualifier Austreng bowled 1,444 on games of 215, 280, 225, 265, 236 and 223. 

The 154-player field averaged 203.6, with the top 32 finalists averaging 223.2. 

The final rounds of match play begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Rosebowl Lanes.

Lang Posts NSBA Triumph

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

Ken Lang of Eastpointe won his second National Senior Bowling Association title with a 225-197 victory over Leo Scantamburlo of Riverview at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights. Lang cashed for $1,000 and Scantamburlo took home $500.

Lang qualified eighth and proceeded to beat Joe Krajenke of Clinton Township 183-177, Ed DeBlock of Canada 205-169 and Ron Burgess of Plymouth 203-195 to advance to the title match.

After qualifying seventh, Scantamburlo triumphed over Joe Buffa of Macomb 257-216, Dave Forfitt of Canada 259-179 and Steve Sears of Michigan Center 222-154 en route to the final match.

Local cashers were Mark Hatchigian of Novi for $90 and Mike LaRocca of New Hudson $90.

Ed DeBlock was the top qualifier and Rick Vittone of Canada had the top game with 269.

MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Senior Masters Tournament qualifying is slated to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at Rosebowl Lanes in Roseville.

Qualifying will be conducted in two squads on Feb. 11. After the six games of qualifying is completed the top 31 players plus defending champion Rick Vittone of Tecumseh, Ontario will return for double elimination match play on Sunday, Feb. 12. The top eight players after the first day of match play will come back on Saturday, Feb. 18 to complete the competition. Matches consist of two games total pins.

First place will pay $3,000 with $1,500 for runner-up.

The star studded field includes Ed Austreng of Waterford Township (Senior Masters champion 2005), John Bennett of Clarkston (Masters 1977 & Senior Masters 2004), Rick Capaldi of Canton (Masters 2012), Anthony Dadeppo of Troy (Masters 1995), Doug Evans of Gibraltar (Masters 1998 and Senior Masters 1999 and 2000), Ken Kossick of Commerce (Masters 1997 & 2002), Joe Krajenke of Clinton Township (Masters 1999), Fred McClain of Allen Park (Masters 1978 and Senior Masters 2003), Richard Planko of Novi (Senior Masters 2010), Lee Snow of Wixom (Senior Masters 2007), Harley Trumbull Jr. of New Boston (Senior Masters 1996 and 2002), David Tulak of Taylor (Masters 1988) and Larry Walker of Garden City (Senior Masters 2009).

Capaldi Wins MDUSBC Masters

Rick Capaldi of Canton won the Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters Tournament at Century Bowl in Waterford Township Sunday when he defeated Corey Miller of Grand Blanc 734-691 to win the $4,000 first prize and the title. Miller settled for the second place check of $2,000.

Capaldi was the 20th qualifier with a 10-game total of 2,255. He averaged 231.1 for the entire tournament and 233.7 in match play. He remained in the winner’s bracket by defeating Andrew Featherstone of White Lake 696-688, Ronnie Sparks Jr. of Ecorse 665-595, Craig Nidiffer of Trenton 590-560, Joseph Krajenke of Clinton Township 815-684 and Miller 773-759 en route to the final match. In the final match he lost to Miller 659-635 to force a final set, where he prevailed.

“It may take a while, but dreams do come true,” said the 62-year-old Capaldi. Capaldi also won the MDUSBC Super Senior competition in 2010 and was runner-up in 2011.

Miller qualified sixth with 2,321. He averaged 228.2 for 34 games of tournament competition. In match play he remained in the winner’s bracket with victories over Patrick Cusick of Sterling Heights 640-545, George Juszczyk Jr. of Dearborn Heights 652-640, Scott Bowersock of Dearborn Heights 713-639 and Brian Thompson of Flat Rock 594-592 before falling to Capaldi the first time 773-759. In the loser’s bracket he defeated Nidiffer 730-705 before beating Capaldi 659-635 to force the final match.

Nidiffer qualified 12th with 2,299 and cashed for $1,500 for third place. He won his first two matches against Jeffrey Suma Sr. of Auburn Hills 664-577 and Alan Pittman of Clarkston 683-661 before being knocked into the loser’s bracket by Capaldi 590-560. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Michael Chism of Redford 709-644, Juszczyk 687-641, Thompson 782-518, defending champion Mason Brantley of Detroit 719-687 before ending his day with a loss to Miller 730-705.

2011 champion Brantley was seeded ninth by tournament rule with 2,282 and took home $1,000 for fourth place. He won his first match over Kevin Trumbull of Romulus 705-698 before being knocked into the loser’s bracket by Krajenke 686-659. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township 744-633, Sparks 721-613, Bowersock 802-651, Jake Monto of Walbridge, Ohio 778-591, Krajenke 697-645 before being knocked out of the tournament by Nidiffer 719-687.

Krajenke and Thompson each earned $750 for their efforts. Monto and Juszczyk Jr. took home $500 each for seventh and eighth respectively.

Former champions Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township finished 19th for $275, David Tulak of Taylor finished 21st for $275 and Kerry Kreft of Warren 27th for $225.

Top qualifier 2006 champion David Ewald of Macomb won his first two matches, then lost his next two to get knocked out of the competition and cashed for $400.

Other local bowlers who cashed were Alan Pittman for $325, John Robertson of Waterford Township $275, Andy Featherstone of White Lake $225, Jeff Suma Sr. of Auburn Hills $225 and Glen Pilon of Farmington Hills $150.
