David Ewald Leads MDUSBC Masters Qualifying

MDUSBC MASTERS QUALIFYING

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters tournament qualifying wrapped up at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights Sunday, Jan. 23 with David Ewald of Macomb leading the 10-game qualifying round with 2,354.

The 2006 MDUSBC Masters champion Ewald averaged 235.4 for the two days of qualifying rounds. Five-game rounds of 1,124 and 1,230 propelled him to the lead. Ewald shot a tournament high 299 in the first game of the second round and led by 49 pins over Ryan VanHecke of Sterling Heights. Ewald had games of 214-224-189-251-246-299-235-235-247-214. Ewald will face Ron Rospierski of Warren in first round match play action on Saturday, Jan. 29.

VanHecke had five-game qualifying blocks of 1,150 and 1,135 on Sunday to be seeded second. He faces Troy Stus of South Lyon.

Defending champion Eddie Grace of Howell is seeded ninth and will face Craig Nidiffer of Monroe.

In addition to Stus other Oakland County bowlers in the finals are 2005 and 2007 Masters champion Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township who faces Harold Sullins of Chesterfield Township; and John Robertson of Waterford Township who faces fellow county resident 1997 Masters champion Ken Kossick of Commerce Township.

The maximum field of 160 averaged 197.5, with the top 32 finalists averaging 216.5. Ewald had the top qualifying block with 1,230 and shared top game honors with Mike Calhoun of Wyandotte with 299.

Match play begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Astro Lanes in the double elimination three-game match play format. The final match is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.

The competition was conducted on the “Blue” pattern of the Red, White and Blue series of lane patterns developed by the United States Bowling Congress. BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

Rick Schultz of Warren won the Budweiser Michigan Majors over top seed Shane Dufresne of Clio 248-155 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park to claim the top prize of $1,300. Dufresne received $600.

Schultz qualified fourth with a nine-game total of 2,156 and proceeded to beat Joe Manor of Lansing 259-203, Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights 258-227 and Randy Warnken of Clinton Township 255-206 en route to the championship match. This was Schultz’s third MMBA title.

Dufresne was the top qualifier with 2,208 which included a 300 and 299 game.

“This is just amazing,” said Schultz. “It’s been 10 years since my last win. I never thought I would win again at my age.” Schultz is 55 years old.

Warnken earned $600, Wyatt $500 and Manor $400.

Local cashers were Bob Chamberlain Jr. of Holly for $260 and Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township $110.

The next MMBA tournament will be Feb. 19 at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights.

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

Mike Abbey of Jackson won his first National Senior Bowling Association title with a 289-214 triumph over Mike Chapman of Garden City at Oak Lanes in Westland.

Abbey qualified 16th and beat Ross Beers of Saginaw 255-247, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield 246-234, George Humphry of Grosse Pointe Farms 235-190 and Dennis Korkoske of East Lansing 269-235 on his way to the final match. Abbey took home $1,000.

Chapman qualified 11th. In match play he defeated Mike McCleskey of Southfield 178-171, top seed John Thomasma of Kalamazoo 199-195, Larry Walker of Garden City 212-186 and Tony Stipcak of Redford 248-227 en route to the clash with Abbey. Chapman received $500.

Oakland County senior cashers were Phil Horowitz for $120, Mike McCleskey $110, Mike LaRocca of New Hudson $110 and Kevin Scott of Ferndale $110.

The next NSBA event will be Feb. 5 at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights.

Schultz Claims MMBA Title

Second Half of 2010 Highlights

SECOND HALF OF 2010 HIGHLIGHTS

July – Matt Randall of Allen Park beat Jeff Edwards of Sterling Heights at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights to win the monthly MMBA event. Dave Eatmon of Ferndale brought home the NSBA title from Colonial Lanes in Ann Arbor over Ken Kossick of Commerce Township. Mike Norris Jr. of Melvindale set the series record of 869 for Sport Bowling in the Dan Ottman Memorial PBA Experience league at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights. He eclipsed the previous record by seven pins.

August – Mike Lee of Dearborn Heights beat Tim Magyar of Redford to capture the NSBA month event at Troy Lanes in Troy. The 74th Annual Gavie Tournament kicked off the bowling season in Detroit at Thunderbowl Lanes. A total of 116 team competed in one of the largest one-day tournaments around. Winning teams were the Drunk Horns, Boy Bye and the Not Much teams in their respective divisions. Matt Anderson of Holly, bowling in his first MMBA tournament, beat Dale Hofmeister of Essexville at Galaxy Lanes in Grand Blanc.

September – The Detroit Bowling Hall of Fame class of 2010 was announced which included Novella Daniels of Harper Woods, Mark Moore of Macomb, Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon and Paul Stuart of Ferndale. Induction ceremonies were in October. After finishing second three times during 2010 Dale Hofmeister finally won his record 16th MMBA title with a triumph over Craig Nidiffer of Monroe at Royal Scot Lanes in Lansing.

October – Craig Nidiffer, after finishing second the previous month, beat Ed Danner of Otter Lake in the MMBA at Bay Lanes in Bay City. Dick Selgo of Archbold, Ohio beat Rick Gregor of Sterling Heights at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights to win the NSBA tournament. Jordan Hornes of Westland and A’Shawntae White of Detroit won the boy’s and girl’s divisions respectively of the MDUSBC Junior Masters at Royal Lanes in Warren.

November – Rick Capaldi of Canton won the MDUSBC Super Senior Masters at Royal Lanes in Warren with a victory over Ed Austreng of Waterford Township. Aaron Lorincz of Belleville won his first MMBA title in the 44th Annual Championship tournament at Cherry Hill Lanes in Dearborn Heights over Jeff Roche of Dearborn Heights. D.J. Hochstein of White Lake and Joe Manor of Lansing are inducted into the MMBA Hall of Fame. Dan Mayer of Waterford Township beat Joe Buffa of Macomb at Taylor Lanes in Taylor in the month NSBA event. Bowling legends Eddie Lubanski and award winning Detroit Free Press bowling writer Matt Fiorito pass away.

December – Longtime Pontiac Women’s Bowling Association secretary Jan Willson of Clarkston passes away. Aleksandra (Sasha) Hudak of Taylor won the MDUSBC Queens over Nicole Aleo of Sterling Heights at Shelby Lanes in Shelby Township. Mike McCleskey of Southfield won the NSBA Holiday Classic at Plaza Lanes in Plymouth over Tony Stipcak of Redford. Ray Eddy III of Saginaw won his second major title of the Budweiser Michigan Majors by winning the Tournament of Champions over top-seeded Mason Brantley of Detroit at Plaza Lanes in Plymouth.

Mason Brantley of Detroit recorded the top number of 300 games during 2010 with 11. Topping Oakland County bowlers with five were Michael Atkins of Pontiac and Julius Bierkamp of Ferndale.

Mason Brantley of Detroit and Mark Brown of Warren broke the metro Detroit record when each had an 880 series during 2010. Brantley bowled his on April 10 at Plum Hollow Lanes in Southfield when he started with 280 and followed up with back-to-back 300 games. Brown had his on Nov. 26 at Shore Lanes in St. Clair Shores. His set included games of 290, 290 and 300.

Allen Bordui Jr. of Detroit had the most 800 series during the year with seven, which included a high series of 853. Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township topped the Oakland County bowlers with six with an 831 high.

MDUSBC QUEENS

Aleksandra (Sasha) Hudak of Taylor won the Metro Detroit USBC Association Queens title on Sunday with a thrilling 239-235 triumph over Nicole Aleo of Sterling Heights at Shelby Lanes in Shelby Township.

Hudak barely qualified by finishing in the last spot for match play with a six-game total of 1,298 on games of 224-237-188-236-222-191. In match play she defeated top qualifier Erin Williams of Detroit 244-222, Kelly Konarski of Sterling Heights 266-194 and Debra Dickerson Detroit 222-199 en route to the championship match.

She averaged 226.9 for 10 games of tournament competition. This is her first year in adult competition. Previously she had won the Girls Division of the MDUSBC Junior Masters.

“This is a great beginning to my adult bowling career.” said Hudak.

Second Half of 2010 Highlights

SECOND HALF OF 2010 HIGHLIGHTS

July – Matt Randall of Allen Park beat Jeff Edwards of Sterling Heights at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights to win the monthly MMBA event. Dave Eatmon of Ferndale brought home the NSBA title from Colonial Lanes in Ann Arbor over Ken Kossick of Commerce Township. Mike Norris Jr. of Melvindale set the series record of 869 for Sport Bowling in the Dan Ottman Memorial PBA Experience league at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights. He eclipsed the previous record by seven pins.

August – Mike Lee of Dearborn Heights beat Tim Magyar of Redford to capture the NSBA month event at Troy Lanes in Troy. The 74th Annual Gavie Tournament kicked off the bowling season in Detroit at Thunderbowl Lanes. A total of 116 team competed in one of the largest one-day tournaments around. Winning teams were the Drunk Horns, Boy Bye and the Not Much teams in their respective divisions. Matt Anderson of Holly, bowling in his first MMBA tournament, beat Dale Hofmeister of Essexville at Galaxy Lanes in Grand Blanc.

September – The Detroit Bowling Hall of Fame class of 2010 was announced which included Novella Daniels of Harper Woods, Mark Moore of Macomb, Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon and Paul Stuart of Ferndale. Induction ceremonies were in October. After finishing second three times during 2010 Dale Hofmeister finally won his record 16th MMBA title with a triumph over Craig Nidiffer of Monroe at Royal Scot Lanes in Lansing.

October – Craig Nidiffer, after finishing second the previous month, beat Ed Danner of Otter Lake in the MMBA at Bay Lanes in Bay City. Dick Selgo of Archbold, Ohio beat Rick Gregor of Sterling Heights at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights to win the NSBA tournament. Jordan Hornes of Westland and A’Shawntae White of Detroit won the boy’s and girl’s divisions respectively of the MDUSBC Junior Masters at Royal Lanes in Warren.

November – Rick Capaldi of Canton won the MDUSBC Super Senior Masters at Royal Lanes in Warren with a victory over Ed Austreng of Waterford Township. Aaron Lorincz of Belleville won his first MMBA title in the 44th Annual Championship tournament at Cherry Hill Lanes in Dearborn Heights over Jeff Roche of Dearborn Heights. D.J. Hochstein of White Lake and Joe Manor of Lansing are inducted into the MMBA Hall of Fame. Dan Mayer of Waterford Township beat Joe Buffa of Macomb at Taylor Lanes in Taylor in the month NSBA event. Bowling legends Eddie Lubanski and award winning Detroit Free Press bowling writer Matt Fiorito pass away.

December – Longtime Pontiac Women’s Bowling Association secretary Jan Willson of Clarkston passes away. Aleksandra (Sasha) Hudak of Taylor won the MDUSBC Queens over Nicole Aleo of Sterling Heights at Shelby Lanes in Shelby Township. Mike McCleskey of Southfield won the NSBA Holiday Classic at Plaza Lanes in Plymouth over Tony Stipcak of Redford. Ray Eddy III of Saginaw won his second major title of the Budweiser Michigan Majors by winning the Tournament of Champions over top-seeded Mason Brantley of Detroit at Plaza Lanes in Plymouth.

Mason Brantley of Detroit recorded the top number of 300 games during 2010 with 11. Topping Oakland County bowlers with five were Michael Atkins of Pontiac and Julius Bierkamp of Ferndale.

Mason Brantley of Detroit and Mark Brown of Warren broke the metro Detroit record when each had an 880 series during 2010. Brantley bowled his on April 10 at Plum Hollow Lanes in Southfield when he started with 280 and followed up with back-to-back 300 games. Brown had his on Nov. 26 at Shore Lanes in St. Clair Shores. His set included games of 290, 290 and 300.

Allen Bordui Jr. of Detroit had the most 800 series during the year with seven, which included a high series of 853. Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township topped the Oakland County bowlers with six with an 831 high.

MDUSBC QUEENS

Aleksandra (Sasha) Hudak of Taylor won the Metro Detroit USBC Association Queens title on Sunday with a thrilling 239-235 triumph over Nicole Aleo of Sterling Heights at Shelby Lanes in Shelby Township.

Hudak barely qualified by finishing in the last spot for match play with a six-game total of 1,298 on games of 224-237-188-236-222-191. In match play she defeated top qualifier Erin Williams of Detroit 244-222, Kelly Konarski of Sterling Heights 266-194 and Debra Dickerson Detroit 222-199 en route to the championship match.

She averaged 226.9 for 10 games of tournament competition. This is her first year in adult competition. Previously she had won the Girls Division of the MDUSBC Junior Masters.

“This is a great beginning to my adult bowling career.” said Hudak.
